The Real Story on Alcohol: A Balanced Perspective
In a recent newsletter, I discussed the presumed risks of alcohol and how health guidelines are becoming increasingly strict. Now, The Economist (January 11, 2025 issue) offers a more balanced perspective that’s worth sharing.
We all know that excessive drinking is bad for our health, increasing risks of cancer, liver disease, obesity, and accidents. Some experts argue that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption. For example, Canada's new guidelines define "low risk" drinking as just two drinks per week—a drastic reduction from previous recommendations. The World Health Organization (WHO) takes an even harder stance, advising that people who don’t drink shouldn’t start "for any reason."
