Italy accessibility information for wheelchair users and others with a mobility/physical disability
Marking the conclusion of the first week of the 2024 new year
A new year is always the time when we look back at the past year and reflect on what we can do better in the new year. It's usually stuff like adding exercise to your life, eating less and losing a few pounds, reading more books, exploring more foods. It’s a laudable goal to strive to be better and make self-improvements. They’re all very self-focused resolutions, and this year I'm striving to focus outwards, towards community.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes there's a convergence of an idea or a concept that points you in a specific direction? Recently - and it began in the middle of last year – everything has been pointing to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and it's occupied my mind in many ways. DEI is usually associated with inclusion of non-binary and partner choices but there's so much more to it.
I'm the President of the American Women's Association of Rome, and the most divisive and exclusionary aspect within our organization is technology. Our older members are increasingly left behind as it becomes harder and harder for them to navigate websites, social media, make online purchases and do online banking. Not to mention AI!
I said before that sometimes there is a convergence of ideas that point you in a certain direction and that happened to me in the past few months on inclusionary issues relating to wheelchair users, and others with mobility/physical disabilities.
I usually ask new paid Substack subscribers if there is a topic they'd like me to cover in my newsletter, or on my Flavor of Italy podcast. One subscriber asked if I would do a podcast episode all about Italy accessibility information for wheelchair users, as she is one herself.
